I want you to think back, think back to a time in your K-12 education when something "stuck", a piece of knowledge that you remember to this day. Was it an English teacher telling you the iambic pentameter of a poem, or a Math teacher teaching you the how to find the circumfrence of a circle? Chances are if I asked you figure out the compliment of a 45 degree angle you might actually punch me in the face. If I ask you to tell me the importance of the Presidency of Franklin Roosevelt I would be willing to bet that you can answer immediately. I agree that there needs to be accountability in our schools, but not at the expense of Social Studies. If you ask me what is and will always be the most important subject that is in our schools it is Social Studies because you have to "see where you were to see where you are going"-unknown","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"43423936","body":"I believe the most important subject in school is math. Although history is just as important, math is something you will need for the rest of your life. Math is used everyday no matter what you are doing. Telling time, keeping a schedule, driving, and many more activities. You even need math for history and other multiple subjects. A lot of schools are so worried about the PSSA's that they take time away from other classes to make our scores better. My mom who has been out of school for years knows more Social Studies than I do. Most kids I know do not even know all of the fifty states and all of the capitals! I remember most of what i learned in my history classes from past years. I probabaly know more about Social Studies then I do about everything else. The reason why is because people need to learn what happened in the past and look in the present to try to chage it for the better. I also disagree with Social Studies being the most important. The reason why I think so is because now during this period of time poeple are in need of learning math. Everywhere in any place people need math. math is the new subject that will get you anywhere. We were learning about the state of Pennsylvania and Catasauqua more specifically. My town used to be a "Million-Dollar Town" and now its a really cruddy place. My job is tutoring kids and all we do is math and reading. The only "history" or "social studies" that is incorporated is a puzzle of the 50 states and I haven't seen one kid playing with it. It's really horrible that no kid these days can identify Albany to New York unless they live in that state.
